Apart from near misses mid air, India’s aviation history is filled with stories of tragedies that could have been avoided.
With liberalisation of economy, the aviation Industry in India took a major leap.
Every year more than forty million Indians take the air route, aided by the low costs
private airlines which accounts for 60 percent of total travelers. While the private
airlines is going from strength to strength despite many hiccups including questionable
recruitments, the government run Air India refuses to learn. The only thing that
Air India has to its credit today is connecting smaller towns in its worn out planes.
India has had major airline disasters and most of it involves Air India. The former
subsidiary of Air India, Indian Airlines and Alliance Air, Pawan Hans Helicopters
Ltd. (PHHL) accounts for worst airline mishaps. More than thousand people have lost
their lives involving Air India. This excludes the crashes like AI flight between
Montreal-
With such track records, there is bound to be questions at the safety measures. Why the national carrier has almost become a on air coffin?
Yet again, there was another tragedy involving the national helicopter company of India. This time it was at home.
The recent chopper crash in Tawang not only devastated the family members of those who died in the tragic mishap, it has made us question whether air travel is a safe bet in Arunachal. While we mourn the dead, the crash has raised numerous questions. We don’t have answers today but somewhere we have to figure out to ensure that such tragedy never happens again.
Today, air travel in many states in the North east is synonymous with Pawan Hans.
Jointly operated by the Government of India and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Pawan Hans mainly operates in Northeast regions and ONGC project areas.
Two crashes in Arunachal and one in Shillong involving Pawan Hans comes to mind. Accidents, they say are accidents but then some accidents can be avoided or impact minimized.
The impact of tragedy in Tawang, if one believes the eye witnesses could have been lesser if we had the right fire fighting equipments in place. It’s too painful a topic to even write about, but could the government make effort to ensure that safety measures are implemented.
Could we ground the planes that need to be grounded on time, take a relook at safety measures?
Instead of writing letters about safety, could we ensure that we don’t put lives of air travelers at risk. After every accident, a probe is set up. If we go by the record, these probes are usually reactive, never preempted or proactive. That’s also the time when blame game plays out like musical chairs.
Somewhere responsibilities need to be fixed. It is about time.

Towards better education of girls
Dear Editor,
One of the important matters in our State is Literacy and unfortunately we are far behind in comparison to other states of India. Almost all of the districts of Arunachal Pradesh have female literacy rate below 50%. Hence, the government schemes related to girls’ education should be implemented to its best possible. To attain the objective, the sanctioning authorities must scrutinize the capacity and credentials of the Implementing Agencies. It is a matter of great concern if the Implementing Agencies are not efficient and experienced in the field of education as it may not only hamper the quality of education of the children but also the competence and ability of the students.
Hence, the allocation of educational schemes, especially for girls like the KGBV (Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya), should be allocated based on the potential of the Implementing Agencies (NGOs) and should not be political or under any pressure. Further, advertisements inviting applications should be placed so that well established NGOs could be shortlisted for implementing the scheme.
It is my humble request that the education system should be strict in implementation so that the building of the future generation is firm and our State would produce the best of the best students.
Yours,
Binny Yanga

Fiefdom is what we believe in
Dear Editor,
Micah's "A bad experience" published in the Readers' Forum was indeed a horrific tale. It is good that such an unfortunate experience is shared. Anybody can think of the sense of helplessness and agony involve in such an ugly moment. But when we ponder over the situation in our own place the money involved in the transaction seems to be just a change of the going rate of atrocious fine prevalent here. But I am in no way trying to exonerate the perpetrators.
Even if we construct adequate road networks inside our state to avoid crossing other state for mobility within the state, we can't avoid interacting with people from neighboring state. There is no way one can avoid such a tragedy if the other party doesn't believe in rule of law. We are a nation not known for our civility and regard for fellow human being. Fiefdom is what we believe in; either collectively or as an individual. It pinches only when we are in the wrong side of the bargain. Hope people from our neighboring state learn to see reason; at least towards the innocent public who has pass to pass through it under compulsion.
Yours

Give chance to all
Dear Editor,
I want to share my view regarding APPSC AE examination. All the admit card has already been dispatchat but 40% of aspiring candidates are students of different university and colleges of our country and most of the student have examination in the month of June so they would be unable to face the examination which is to be held in the month of June.
So I request the APPSC to take a decision so that all candidates are given a fair chance.

The festival and Upper Subansiri
Dear Editor,
The decision taken by the All Upper Subansiri District Student Union (AUSDSU) to reconsider the proposal to boycott the organization of Youth festival at Daporijo is a welcome step taken by the student community of the District. The Panchayat members of Dumporijo constituency in particular and District in general appreciate the positive gesture of the student community.
It is a fact that the people of the District were against the heinous crime committed by Boham Bo and his team in the MMS Case. The public and civil society of the state has also registered their protest against the authority for not arresting those accused involved in the MMS scandal. In the Upper Subansiri district the AUSDSU had led the issue to register their protest alleging inaction of the authority and the people of the District also extended their cooperation during the bandh call at Daporijo.
The authority is doing all out effort to nab the main accused in the scandal. The student community as well as public should cooperate with the authority in arresting the main accused and other involved in the case. We should not squarely blame the authority alone as it is also the moral obligation of every one of us to help the authority wherever possible in nabbing the accused.
Now it is a high time to cooperate with the organizing committee and District administration for the successful organization of the Youth festival. It is a great privilege and a rare occasion for the people of the District to witness such mega event and live performance of the renowned singer like Kailash Kher.
Such mega event is possible only because of Deputy Commissioner Upper Subansiri we should be grateful to the Deputy Commissioner Abhiyankar for his commitment and dedication to make the programme a success.
We fully believe that out of such events Upper Subansiri and people of the Dist will be benefited in tourism and other sectors. It will give scope to local people to engage themselves in business during the festival period. Therefore, it is a moral obligation of each and every individual, Panchayat member and other organization to cooperate with the organizing committee and District administration for successful conduct of the mega programme.
Yours,
Mago Bage
